Use of technology in the classroom

Through a generous donation by the Weldon family, The Stony Brook School opened its Innovation Lab in March of 2015. Our Lab hosts our STEM courses, our robotics teams and our coding classes. However it is also a place where students can come and work on projects that are exciting and important to them. With state of the art 3-D Modeling Software and Printers, Coding Software and a host of other technological and engineering tools, students are free to pursue their passions and exercise their creativity. Our Lab is a hub of activity with students constantly working on exciting projects. From building drones, submersibles and robots to coding new apps, our students demonstrate their entrepreneurial and creative powers in our lab. The Innovation Lab is the first in a multiphase plan to significantly increase our abilities to provide state of the art lab space and tools for the creators of the future. We are confident that our students will develop the next killer app or important technology that will change the way we live. (We just ask that they remember us when they make it big!) An important part of our STEM curriculum at Stony Brook is to ensure that we help students build the ethical framework that will guide responsible development of technology. As BF Skinner said, "The real problem is not whether machines think but whether men do." At Stony Brook we give students the philosophical infrastructure to think ethically about their choices as it relates to technological creation and innovation. 21st Century students will live in a world of possibility as it relates to technology and we want them to transcend mere profiteering and consumption on their pathway to be responsible creators and users.

Learning Support

Learning Support is offered to students with documented disabilities that impact learning. Taking into consideration each student's unique learning profile, Learning Support offers cross-curricular support to improve the student's ability to implement strategies and manage his/her academics independently. Using course content, students develop skills in areas such as: organization, time management, study skills, test-taking skills, note-taking skills, reading comprehension, writing, and self-advocacy. Each student is assigned a learning specialist who works with him/her for the entire academic year. The learning specialist helps each student develop individualized, specific, and measurable learning goals, and a progress report is sent home quarterly. The learning specialist also meets with the student's teachers to collaborate on best practices for student success and to provide the student with appropriate support and accommodation. Living Accommodations

SBS is home to approximately 200 boarders from grades 7-12. Our desire is for our students to learn and grow as they live together in a safe and comfortable community. There are currently seven single-gender residential halls that house our boarding students and sixteen faculty families. The remainder of the faculty live in the homes that surround our 55 acre wooded campus. Although every residence hall is uniquely designed, each one has: a main lounge with couches and a television laundry facilities a kitchen area personal desks high speed WiFi The majority of the rooms are designed for two students, although there are scattered singles and triples.

School Lunch

We proudly partner with SAGE Dining Services to provide nutritious, variety-rich, cooked-from-scratch meals for our community (lunch for all, and breakfast and family-style dinner for our boarders and faculty). SAGE's seasonal menus are custom designed for The Stony Brook School, and reflect our students' preferences as well as the fresh products available in the marketplace. We are able to accommodate any special dietary needs, including food allergies. Vegetarian entrees, an abundantly stocked salad bar, fresh fruit and homemade bread are available at all meals. You might also like to know: SAGE works closely with local and organic merchants, farms, and community resources to feature food grown or raised on Long Island. Their goal is to purchase as much local product as possible, safely and within budget. SAGE supports the humane treatment of animals, as well as the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch guidelines for sustainable fishing practices. SAGE's milk is 100% antibiotic-free and hormone-free. SAGE uses 100% wind energy to power their corporate offices.
