The Putney School is a coeducational boarding and day school for grades 9-12 founded in 1935 by educational pioneer, Carmelita Hinton, who wanted "to make school life a more real, less sheltered, less self-centered venture." We are a progressive school, which means we believe people learn best by doing, not by being told. Use of technology in the classroom
Technology is an integral part of what we do here at Putney. From blended learning classes to Google Apps for education, robotics, programming, three-dimensional design, geographic information systems, science lab data collection and the burgeoning world of digital music and art creation, technology provides opportunities for project-based and hands-on learning. The Technology Department helps students, faculty, and staff learn new technologies, improve their skills, and see the creative potential technology allows. A wide variety of resources are available including copiers and printers, three-dimensional printers, video production equipment, digital SLR cameras, MIDI controllers and music composition tools, Pro Tools and Ableton-based music production and recording equipment, photo printers, and much more. Campus computer labs include the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of applications for video production, graphic design, digital photography, and desktop publishing.
Learning Support
The Putney School recognizes that all students learn differently. We have students with a variety of learning styles in every classroom and students with diagnosed learning differences are not treated as "other." There are many ways to learn. Located in the center of campus, the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) serves as a resource for all students who want to maximize their learning. The CTL offers structured and comprehensive academic support in the form of executive function coaching, study skills instruction, and content area tutorials. In addition, the CTL provides all students with the opportunity to meet with tutors during drop-in hours and in the evenings during our supervised study labs. Using a strength-based approach, our program helps students to develop the tools, self-awareness, and advocacy skills necessary to become confident, active, and independent learners. The director of the CTL is available for consultation with parents, students, and faculty. Families who would like to enroll their students in our tutorial program may make arrangements with the director.

Living Accommodations
Our campus includes nine dorms and five solar-powered cabins. Our dorms are home to anywhere from 10 to 30 students, and our cabins have space for two senior students. Many dorm parents have children, so the dorms feel like home-away-from-home. The dorm parents work with the student dorm heads to balance the many things Putney demands and offers – jobs, schedules, and choices. So much of life at Putney is outside of the dorms, and students can spend their free time as they please on campus. Whether it's playing music in the Currier Center, drawing or making jewelry in Wender, rock climbing in the Field House, or making friends hiking on our extensive trail system, we encourage students to feel at home in every space on campus.
