Rotterdam Netherlands
Rotterdam International Secondary School (RISS)

RISS is a values-driven international school whose aim is to develop 'confident, ethically responsible and innovative global citizens'. With teachers and families from over sixty countries, we are a truly international community providing world-class educational programmes. By completing the International IGCSE's and the prestigious International Baccalaureate programme or Career-related programme, our students leave well-prepared for studies in any higher educational setting anywhere in the world.

The language of instruction is English. Students are encouraged to maintain or further develop their own language skills and to take pride in their own culture. It is possible to do IBDP and IGCSE examinations in certain “own language” studies and we encourage our students, where possible, to do this. In many instances, it may result in the students receiving a bilingual diploma. This assists the students tremendously if they want to return to their home country for higher education.

Curricula

At RISS, the Foundation Years consist of Grades 6, 7, and 8 (ages 11 to 14). This is an exciting and formative time in a young person’s life. It is also a period of transition, as students move into secondary school and adolescence. In our inquiry-based setting, we encourage students to take an active role in their learning.

The Foundation Years offer a creative programme where students engage with a range of subjects, helping them become well-rounded and balanced individuals as they enter the Middle Years. In our international school, with more than 70 different nationalities represented, we celebrate diversity. We believe all students have potential and bring unique gifts and talents to our community.

In addition, we offer an innovative, school-developed programme called RISSRose. This programme is designed to give students opportunities to explore and grow beyond the traditional classroom setting, fostering a love of learning through experiential experiences. We provide a dynamic learning environment where students participate in hands-on activities that develop critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. By integrating real-world challenges and interactive learning methods, where students can apply and transfer their skills, we empower them to take ownership of their learning journey.

The RISS Middle Years (Grades 9 and 10) represent an exciting stage in a student’s academic, personal, and social development. They provide both a natural progression from the RISS Foundation Years (Grades 6–8) and excellent preparation for the RISS IB Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme (CP) in Grades 11 and 12, as well as other academic or career pathways.

RISS offers the two-year International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), administered by Cambridge Assessment International Education for over 30 years. This flexible curriculum is designed for international contexts and promotes learners who are confident, responsible, reflective, innovative, and engaged. Each year, the IGCSE receives over 800,000 entries from around 160 countries.

During the Middle Years, students follow a broad, balanced, and integrated programme that combines IGCSE and RISS subjects. They are stretched, challenged, and inspired by IGCSE subjects across key areas: Languages (including English and a world language), Mathematics, Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as Creative and Professional disciplines. Students also have the opportunity to pursue personal interests through elective subjects and may foster their mother-tongue language through optional private IGCSE study.

In addition to academic subjects, RISS students develop language skills in their host country through regular Dutch lessons. They also build knowledge and understanding of social-emotional and physical well-being through our tutorial and Physical Education programmes. The RISS Reach programme further empowers students to become thoughtful, reflective, and engaged global citizens.

The Senior Years at RISS (Grades 11 and 12) are a period of immense value and growth in our students’ social, intellectual, and moral development. On the cusp of independent adulthood, our students are supported by holistic yet rigorous academic programmes that encourage them to become responsible, internationally minded individuals.

Our senior students engage in the challenging academic programmes offered by the International Baccalaureate (IB). The IB qualifications are recognised and accepted by major institutions of higher education around the world.

At RISS, we offer both the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and the IB Career-related Programme (CP).

Learning during the Senior Years is shaped by the development of key skills: critical thinking, communication, social interaction, self-management, and research. Our teaching approach is inquiry-based, focusing on conceptual understanding, effective student collaboration, and differentiation to meet diverse learning needs. Learning is further supported through both formative and summative assessments, guided by clearly defined criteria.
